Apple Pecan Cinnamon Rolls

Delicious cinnamon rolls filled with warm flavors of cinnamon, apples, and pecans, perfect for brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup cooked apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup toasted pecans, chopped
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and milk. Add your active dry yeast and a teaspoon of granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it bubbles.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Add in the softened butter and egg. Mix until the ingredients come together into a dough.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5–7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it rise: Place your kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for about an hour or until it doubles in size.
  5. Prepare the filling: While the dough is rising, mix together 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and your cooked apple pie filling in a bowl.
  6. Roll it out: After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a large rectangle, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Spread the filling: Spread your apple mixture over the dough evenly, leaving a border around the edges.
  8. Roll and cut: Starting from one long edge, roll the dough into a log and cut it into 12 equal pieces.
  9. Second rise: Arrange the rolls in a greased baking pan. Cover them again with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the rolls for about 25-30 minutes or until golden.
  11. Prepare the frosting: Beat together 8 oz softened cream cheese, 2 cups powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  12. Frost and serve: Generously spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls before serving.

Notes

These rolls are best enjoyed warm. They can be prepared up to the second rise stage and refrigerated overnight.
