Baked Apple Donuts

  • 1/2 cup applesauce or apple butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar (for cinnamon sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (for cinnamon sugar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Prepare the Pan: Grease a donut pan with cooking spray or butter.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together applesauce, buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  5. Combine the Mixtures: Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and fold gently until just combined.
  6. Fill the Pan: Fill the donut pan about halfway using a piping bag.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until golden.
  8. Cool and Coat: Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes and coat in cinnamon sugar.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm with tea or coffee.

Notes

Try adding a hint of orange zest for extra flavor! Donuts can be frozen for up to a month.
